May 12, 1989 — Release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

May 12, 1989

Video games are an important part of the IT industry. One of the most notable releases in gaming history was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES. The game was not revolutionary from a technological standpoint — its main achievements were tied to game design and commercial success.

TMNT combined two unusual things for its era: it was a licensed game based on an existing media franchise, and it was genuinely difficult. Licensed games at the time were usually simple and heavily focused on marketing. TMNT instead became one of the hardest games of its generation, while also mixing mechanics and ideas from several different genres. For an NES game of that period, it was not exactly a breakthrough, but it was definitely an impressive achievement.

The game also arrived at the perfect moment. Because of the enormous popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, fans rushed to buy it as soon as it appeared in stores. That became another important part of the story, since licensed games of that era rarely managed to launch right at the peak of a franchise’s popularity.

After its success, the developer KONAMI released several more successful TMNT games, along with games based on other major franchises such as Batman, The Simpsons, and X-Men.
