What is XHTML?

XHTML is, essentially, HTML forced to live by the rules of XML.

In the 1990s, the web often looked like the notes of a madman: developers left tags unclosed, mixed upper and lower case, and forgot quotation marks. Browsers “digested” all of this, spending enormous resources trying to guess where a heading ended and a paragraph began.

The W3C consortium decided it had had enough. They took XML — a strict language for data exchange — and applied its discipline to how web pages were written.

That is how XHTML appeared: a language where a single missing quote could reward you with a blank page and an error in the browser.

Why was this needed?

The main idea was predictability. In the 2000s, search engine crawlers were evolving rapidly, and reading the web without errors required pages to have a stable, consistent structure.

XHTML was everywhere and nowhere at the same time

One of the funniest facts about this standard is that almost everyone used it, but almost no one used it properly.

A unique situation emerged. Developers began adding the XHTML 1.0 header at the top of their code because it was considered a sign of “elite” professionalism.

But there was a trick: for XHTML to truly work in strict mode, the server had to send it with a special header (application/xhtml+xml). In this mode, the smallest error would break the entire site.

Developers looked at this, got scared, and kept serving their pages as ordinary HTML. Browsers saw this and continued forgiving mistakes. In the end, the world got XHTML in name only: everyone closed tags and added quotes so the code looked neat, but true XML-level strictness never really happened.

Where was XHTML actually used properly?

Primarily in the corporate sector and in banking systems.

When you need to exchange financial reports or complex documents between different systems, structure becomes critical. XHTML made it possible to treat a web page almost like a data table. This made life easier for large companies that needed to automatically extract information from websites.

XHTML in WAP

If your modern smartphone can “digest” even the messiest code, the mobile phones of 2000s did not have that luxury.

Processors back then were weak and could not afford to parse chaotic HTML the way desktop computers could. That is why XHTML Mobile Profile was created for the mobile web.

If you ever used WAP internet or early browsers on Nokia or Sony Ericsson phones, you were looking at XHTML. Order was not a preference there — it was the only way to make a page load.

HTML5

The idea of XHTML 2.0 — which was meant to eliminate errors entirely — caused a real rebellion among browser vendors (Apple, Mozilla, Opera).

They argued: “The web should be for people, not for machines.” That is how HTML5 was born. It made a brilliant move: it officially allowed the kind of leniency found in old HTML, while still preserving all the tools for those who wanted to write clean, well-structured code.

HTML5 took the best from XHTML — semantics and tidiness — and threw away the fanaticism and error screens for every typo.

XHTML never became the ultimate standard its creators had hoped for. But it played its role. Thanks to it, we no longer write tags in all caps or forget to put quotes around attributes. Today, developer tools, linters, and static analyzers do much of this work for us. But the culture of writing clean, organized markup owes a great deal to XHTML in the early 2000s.
