Feb 16, 1995 — The .ai Domain Is Released

February 16, 1995

On February 16, 1995, the country code top-level domain .ai was officially delegated.

At that moment, nobody thought it would become one of the most desirable domain zones in the world.

What Is .ai?
The .ai domain is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Anguilla, a small British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean.

Like other country domains — such as .uk, .de, or .fr — it was originally meant for local organizations and businesses.

The mid-1990s were a period when the Domain Name System (DNS) was expanding rapidly.

The Internet was transitioning from an academic and military network into a commercial space.

In 1995:

Netscape was growing fast

Amazon was founded

Domain registrations became commercial

New country domains were being delegated around the world.

.ai was simply one more entry on the list.

No one connected it with artificial intelligence.

The Unexpected Second Life
For more than 20 years, .ai remained relatively obscure.

Everything changed in the 2010s.

As startups focused on artificial intelligence began to multiply, founders searched for short and meaningful domain names.

And “AI” was already in the domain itself.

Companies building machine learning tools, chatbots, and generative models started using .ai as a branding shortcut.

The domain became especially popular after the rise of large language models and generative AI in the early 2020s.

Economic Impact
For Anguilla, .ai turned into a major source of revenue.

Registration fees for .ai domains are higher than many traditional country domains, and the global demand significantly increased government income.

A small Caribbean territory unexpectedly became financially connected to the global AI boom.

From Geography to Technology
Originally, .ai meant Anguilla.

Today, for most people in tech, it means Artificial Intelligence.

A domain created for a small island became a global symbol of one of the most transformative technologies of the 21st century.

That shift was not planned.

It just happened.
